If you have a large dog that likes to pull when on leash, a prong collar is a safer way to control the dog than a choke collar. However, if the dog is large, usually to get a collar large enough to fit the dog's neck, the prongs used are much larger both in overall size and the diameter of the wire used to make the links. My wife's fingers are no longer strong enough to bend the links enough to easily put on or take off the prong collar with our gordon setter. So we decided to try a prong collar made for smaller dogs. However, the collars with lightweight links are too short to fit a gordon setter. What to do? Buy the lightweight link prong collar and then buy a set of extra links to lengthen the collar. And voila! A lighter weight collar with links that are thin enough for a person lacking in finger strength can handle.
